The Parkersburg Police Department is gearing up for Homecoming 2012. Numerous officers will begin working assignments at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17th, working through midnight on Sunday, August 19th.

Six (6) to 12 officers will be used each night in the Homecoming area for security. Some of the rules for the Homecoming area are; no pets, no alcohol, no riding bicycles/skateboards/scooters/roller blades.

The police department command center will be located in the area of 2nd and Avery Streets again this year. Make sure your children are aware of its location. Lost children are a major concern for officers. Parents/guardians should carry a recent picture of the kids in their custody and be able to tell officers what the children are wearing.

The Parkersburg Police Department will have approximately 30 officers working various intersections during the Half Marathon on Saturday morning. Other area law enforcement agencies will contribute officers for intersections outside city limits. Officers will be at their assigned intersections by 7:15 a.m., with the wheelchair portion of the race slated to begin at 7:45 a.m., runners and walkers starting at 8:00 a.m., and the two (2) mile race beginning at approximately 8:05 a.m. The safety of the runners is of the utmost importance. Vehicular traffic will be severely restricted throughout the course during the race.

10 officers will be working the Homecoming parade detail Saturday following the race. Officers will be at their assigned intersections at approximately 11:30 a.m. with the parade slated to begin at noon. 24th Street at Murdoch Avenue will be closed at approximately 8:00 a.m., open only to parade participants. Market Street from 19th Street to 2nd Street will be closed for the parade, with all cross streets in that span closed or severely limited while the parade is occurring. 19th Street between Market Street and Avery Street will be closed or will have severely limited access beginning with parade preparation and lasting until the completion of the parade. Motorists are asked to avoid this area.

The 911 Center and the Parkersburg Police Department DO NOT have the schedule of events for the Homecoming. These phones are for official business and emergencies only. Please do not use these services in an attempt to get Homecoming event information. It is imperative these phone lines are available for emergency calls.

The Homecoming has traditionally provided worry-free entertainment for families from Wood County and throughout the region. It’s a safe place for people to enjoy all the wonderful things the Homecoming has to offer, we don’t take that responsibility lightly. Traffic complaints are always a problem. We urge people to plan accordingly. The safety of the participants and bystanders is our top priority. We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is a big event each year for our city and proper planning will prevent most problems encountered. We expect all roads to be opened by 2:00 p.m.

Please note that some changes are possibly still occurring. We merely wanted to get out as much information as we could, as early as possible. Below are some other particulars:

-The metered parking on 2nd Street and Juliana Street will be closed beginning at 12 noon on Friday.

-Parking under the Juliana Street Bridge will also be closed beginning at 12 noon on Friday.

-Parking in these areas will remain closed until Sunday at 9pm.

-Saturday at 5:00 a.m. – All traffic on Market Street south of 7th Street will be closed.

-Saturday at 5:30 a.m. – U.S. 50 Eastbound Juliana Street exit will be blocked off with barricades to prevent traffic from entering downtown. This will remain closed until approximately 10:00 a.m.

-On Saturday there will be a car show on Market Street from 9th Street to 3rd Street. Cross streets on Market Street in this area will remain open with the exception of 6th Street. Motorists are asked to avoid this area if possible from 4:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
