Re: Four Arrested for DUI over the Weekend

Four (4) people were arrested for DUI over the weekend pushing the total to 190 for the year, with that number being the highest in the past five (5) years for the department. Since 2000, the highest number of DUI arrests came in 2003 and 2004 with 369 each of those years. The number of DUI arrests exceeded 300 from 2002 to 2005, with the lowest number of DUI arrests since 2000 coming in 2010 with 95.
On 12-29-12 at approximately 3:40 a.m. while responding to another call, Officer W.A. Blatt came across an accident that had just occurred in the 1000 block of Lynn Street. Investigation reveals that Steven Lloyd Shaver was allegedly unable to maintain control of a 2002 Dodge Caravan, striking another vehicle on the roadway. Shaver was allegedly observed having glassy bloodshot eyes, having slurred speech and unsteady movements, and an odor of marijuana and alcohol about his person. Shaver allegedly failed a series of field sobriety tests and was transported to headquarters for processing. Shaver was cooperative with officers, allegedly testing a .112 on the Intoximeter. He was taken to CCMC for medical clearance due to the crash and later placed in the Wood County Holding Center to await arraignment on charges of first offense DUI, failure to maintain control, and expired operator’s license. Shaver was later arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court and released on a $1,600.00 bond.

On 12-29-12 at approximately 5:00 a.m., officers responded to the 1200 block of Lynn Street in reference to a possible DUI which had struck a home and parked vehicle. Investigation reveals that Joshua Allen Cale did allegedly strike a home and a parked vehicle with a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer and left the scene on foot. Officer C.E. Morehead located Cale several blocks away, noting Cale allegedly had slurred speech, glassy bloodshot eyes, staggered and swayed while walking, and had a strong odor of alcohol about his person. Witnesses followed Cale and were able to identify him as the driver of the vehicle. Cale was taken into custody and transported to headquarters for processing. Cale was cooperative with officers, allegedly failing a series of field sobriety tests and testing a .198 on the Intoximeter. Because of the crash, Cale was taken to CCMC for medical treatment and issued citations for first offense aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, no insurance and improper registration. Cale has five (5) days to appear in Wood County Magistrate on the charges or warrants will be issued for his arrest.

On 12-29-12 around noon, Sergeant P.A. Giffen stopped a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire for speeding on Rosemar Road. During the stop, driver David Joseph Garvin allegedly had glassy bloodshot eyes, slow slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol. Garvin allegedly failed a series of field sobriety tests and was taken into custody by Officer J.D. Thomas and transported to headquarters for processing. Garvin cooperated with officers allegedly testing a .173 on the Intoximeter. Garvin was charged with first offense aggravated DUI and underage consumption. Garvin was transported to the Wood County Holding Center and was later arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court where he was released on a $1,500.00 bond.

On 12-30-12 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Officer C.E. Morehead stopped a 2003 Dodge Ram on Jeanette Street for alleged speeding, expired motor vehicle inspection, and expired registration. Driver Michael Lewis Wilson allegedly smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and glassy bloodshot eyes. Wilson was allegedly unsteady while exiting his vehicle and walking. Wilson allegedly failed a series of field sobriety tests and was taken into custody and transported to headquarters for processing. Wilson was cooperative with officers, allegedly testing a .116 on the Intoximeter. A computer check revealed that Wilson had a previous DUI conviction in Wood County on 11-10-11 and was also driving on a revoked West Virginia operator’s license. Wilson was charged with second offense DUI and driving while revoked for DUI. He was placed in the Wood County Holding Center and later arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court where he was released on a $2,500.00 bond.
