Arrest in Juli-Ann Historic District Burglaries

Parkersburg Police were called to three separate residences in the Juli-Ann Historic District over a two hour period to investigate alleged burglaries. The first call for service was received at 2342 hours for officers to respond to a residence in the 1100 block of Juliana Street. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the victim who advised she witnessed a man climbing through an open window to her residence. The victim further advised that she screamed, which made the suspect flee from the residence. Officers saturated the area in an attempt to locate the suspect. The reporting officer also made contact with potential witnesses in the immediate area of this burglary. This officer was able to locate surveillance video that captured the suspect in the neighborhood prior to the burglary.

At 0022 hours, officers were called to a residence in the 1000 block of Ann Street in reference to an alleged burglary. Officers responded and spoke to the victim who advised that an unknown intruder had been inside of their residence. The victims further advised that they had heard the suspect going through drawers while inside. The suspect fled the residence without contact with the residents. Officers began to process the residence and the surrounding areas on the exterior. Officers remained on scene.

At 0139 hours PPD received a third call for service for an alleged burglary. Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Juliana Street. Once on scene, the victim stated that she had heard someone inside of her home and shortly after, she heard the rear door of the residence being closed. Additional officers responded and a suspect was located in the area. The suspect, identified as Morgan James Stuart, was questioned by uniformed officers. While speaking with the police, other officers located gloves in the close proximity to this subject. The officers determined that this suspect was involved in the three reported burglaries and attempted to arrest Stuart. After advising Stuart he was under arrest, he attempted to run, but was immediately taken into custody without further incident.

Officers located items on the person of Stuart that link him to these burglaries. Those items were collected and held as evidence and will be returned to the owners.
Detectives were called out to PPD to interview the arrestee. After the interview was completed, detectives had sufficient evidence to charge Stuart with one count of night-time burglary. Detectives will evaluate evidence and surveillance video to support additional charges. I am confident that the investigation will reveal that these three burglaries are related.

Stuart was arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court where he failed to post a bond of $75,000.00. He is currently housed in the North Central Regional Jail.
